Three layers of filtration, one healthy tank
Filter media is where aquarists spend money repeatedly — which makes it one of the best recurring-revenue categories for an aquarium store. The key is understanding the three jobs media do, then stocking the right mix.
1. Mechanical: pads and sponges trap the debris
Mechanical media physically strain particles out of the water. Filter sponges and pads come first in the flow path. Stock a coarse layer (green or black sponge) for debris and a fine layer (white or blue pad) for polishing. Polyether foam pads are the workhorse — cheap, reusable and cut-to-size for any filter.
2. Biological: surface area is everything
Beneficial bacteria need surface area, and that is what bio media provides. Ceramic rings, bio balls, sintered glass and volcanic stone all work; the higher the porosity, the more bacteria per litre. A blend of ceramic rings and volcanic stone is the value pick that most hobbyists reorder.
3. Chemical: carbon and resins polish the water
Activated carbon removes tannins, odors and medication residues; ion-exchange resins handle ammonia or phosphate in specific situations. Carbon is a consumable — it exhausts in 3–4 weeks — so it drives repeat purchases. Include it in your catalog even if margins are thin.
4. Media placement and flow direction
Order matters: mechanical first (protects the bio media), biological second, chemical last. If media are packed too tightly, flow channels form and the filter short-circuits. Bagged or loose media in a canister should fill 60–70% of the space, not 100%.
5. What your customers reorder
Sponges and pads need replacing every 4–8 weeks; carbon every month; bio media every 6–12 months. A customer with one canister filter buys media roughly every quarter — that is the repeat revenue. Bundle a "media refill kit" for your best-selling filters to capture it.
6. Sizing and packaging for importers
Media ships light but bulky — freight costs matter. Buy standard sheet sizes and cut to order, or negotiate flat-rate cartons per litre. Custom pack sizes with your brand are an easy private-label win because media has no plug or voltage constraints and almost no compliance burden.
