How To

Can You Boil Water in a Titanium Cup? Yes - With Three Conditions

Yes - a single-wall titanium cup will boil water on a gas canister stove, an alcohol stove or a fire. The metal handles the temperature without complaint. What decides whether it works in practice is the wall construction and the handle, not the titanium.

Single-wall or double-wall: which one can take a flame?

Only single-wall. A double-wall cup has a sealed air or vacuum gap between two shells; heating it from outside traps expansion inside the gap and can distort the shells or break the seal. A double-wall cup is a drinking vessel - it keeps coffee warm and keeps your hand cool, and that is the whole job.

Single-wall is the cooking vessel. It is also the lighter one: the 450 ml trail mug in this range weighs 58 g open and 72.2 g with its lid.

How fast does water boil?

Fast, because the wall is thin and titanium conducts heat almost immediately - there is very little metal between the flame and the water. Exact time depends on the burner, the fuel and the starting temperature of the water, so treat any published minute count as a lab number rather than a trail number.

Wind is the bigger variable. A windscreen buys more time than a wider pot does.

What are the three practical conditions?

First, a handle or a grip. A bare titanium cup reaches scalding temperature along its whole body within seconds, so use a folding-handle pot, a silicone sleeve or a pot gripper.

Second, a lid. Without one you are heating the air above the water as well, and the boil takes noticeably longer.

Third, accept the scorch. Uncoated titanium browns starches and sugars quickly at high heat; stir earlier than you would in a coated pan and keep the flame below the base rather than up the sides.

Which piece for which job?

For a brew at a viewpoint, a 450 ml single-wall mug is enough. For a dehydrated meal plus a hot drink, a 750 ml pot with a lid gives room to rehydrate without boiling over. For pour-over coffee for two, a 300 ml gooseneck pot pours more accurately than a cup ever will.

If you are specifying a kit for retail or for a rental fleet, pick the volumes first and the handles second - the same body is available with or without a folding handle, and that single choice decides whether the piece sits on a shelf as drinkware or cookware.
