On 20 October, 470 of the 503 product names in this range were rebuilt to a hard 80-character ceiling. The median name fell from 117 characters to 52. Almost nothing about the pieces changed - but a good deal about what their names tell you did.
What did the rewrite actually change?
Four numbers tell the story. The median name went from 117 characters to 52, the mean from 98 to 53, the longest from 135 to 80, and the count of names running past 80 characters from 321 to zero.
The names were not trimmed one by one to taste. Each was rebuilt to the same pattern - finish, form, capacity, then a weight or a diameter where we publish one - and a fixed pattern produces similar lengths. That is why the spread collapsed instead of just shifting.
Which facts survived the character ceiling?
The physical ones, almost unscathed. 256 names stated a capacity in millilitres before the rewrite and 255 do now. Gramme figures went from 97 to 95, millimetre figures from 113 to 111. Across 503 names, five facts were lost.
That is the useful finding for anyone handing us a spec. A fact that can be written as a number survives a length limit, because '450ml 76g 125mm' costs seventeen characters and settles three arguments at once.
What did the names stop telling you?
The audience. 435 names - 86% of the range - ended with a purpose clause; five do now. The trade words went entirely: 35 names carried an OEM or private-label tag and 51 said bulk or wholesale, and none do now. A Sierra cup read 'Titanium Sierra Cup 300ML Ultralight Ice-Crystal Bushcraft Bowl, Coating-Free 46G Backpacking Mug With Handle, Wholesale OEM' at 124 characters; it now reads 'Titanium Sierra Cup 300ml Ice-Crystal Bowl, Coating-Free 46g Backpacking Mug' at 76, and the two words that left were the trade signal.
The information did not leave the site, it moved into the four highlight lines on each product page, which have no character ceiling. OEM and private-label work is still available across the range - it is arranged per order rather than per SKU.
How do you buy from a 52-character name?
Buy the physical line and ask for the rest. Finish, form, capacity, weight and diameter are all in the name and are safe to quote.
