Short answer: titanium wins on weight and taste, stainless wins on insulation. If the bottle has to hold temperature for hours, titanium single-wall is the wrong tool; if it has to disappear into a pack, stainless rarely wins.
What does the weight difference actually come to?
In this range a 400 ml (14 oz) titanium bottle weighs 84 g and a 750 ml bottle weighs 109 g. Both figures are published per SKU, which is why they are worth quoting rather than estimating.
The reason is density: titanium sits at about 4.51 g/cm3 against roughly 7.9 for stainless steel. At the same wall volume the titanium part is a little over 40% lighter before any design cleverness. Across the 68 bottle SKUs here, capacities run from 150 ml to 800 ml on that same logic.
Which one keeps a drink cold?
Stainless, almost always - because that is an insulation question, not a metal question. A double wall with a vacuum gap holds temperature; a single sheet of metal does not care what it is made of.
Eight of the 68 bottle SKUs here are built with an insulating wall. The other sixty are single wall and are sold on weight, packability and taste. If a buyer asks for twelve hours of cold, the honest answer is that a vacuum stainless bottle is the right product and titanium is answering a different brief.
Does either material change the taste?
Titanium is specified for food contact because it is inert: no liner, no coating, nothing to migrate into an acidic drink. Our own highlight blocks claim no metallic taste on 279 of 503 SKUs.
Stainless is also a food-safe material, but a bottle is a system - liner, weld, gasket. Those parts, not the steel, are where aftertaste usually comes from. When a buyer is comparing taste claims, compare the liner story, not the metal name.
How should a retailer build the range?
Split by job rather than by material loyalty. Weight-led outdoor and travel lines suit titanium at 84 g and 109 g; commuter and school lines that must hold cold water for a day suit vacuum stainless. Carrying both is not indecision, it is covering two briefs.
